In the spirit of self-reflection and inspired by Meg’s awesome year, here’s me revisiting my ’09 goals and looking forward to next year….

How’d I do on my 2009 goals:

-Blog and write more outside of my job, seek more freelance work
A handful of times, but basically, no.
-Not get laid off from aforementioned blogging job
Success.
-Start running again
Fail, thanks to my knees.
-Give up eating out
Aaaaahahahahahha.
-Save $7,000-$10,000 for possibility of being laid off.
Success.
-Swear off plastic bags
Mostly success.

Next year:
-Travel the world

This investigative piece from the AP on Monsanto is earnest, thorough and fascinating, if a bit long. A taste:

With Monsanto’s patented genes being inserted into roughly 95 percent of all soybeans and 80 percent of all corn grown in the U.S., the company also is using its wide reach to control the ability of new biotech firms to get wide distribution for their products, according to a review of several Monsanto licensing agreements and dozens of interviews with seed industry participants, agriculture and legal experts.
Declining competition in the seed business could lead to price hikes that ripple out to every family’s dinner table. That’s because the corn flakes you had for breakfast, soda you drank at lunch and beef stew you ate for dinner likely were produced from crops grown with Monsanto’s patented genes.

Monsanto’s methods are spelled out in a series of confidential commercial licensing agreements obtained by the AP. The contracts, as long as 30 pages, include basic terms for the selling of engineered crops resistant to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, along with shorter supplementary agreements that address new Monsanto traits or other contract amendments.

The company has used the agreements to spread its technology — giving some 200 smaller companies the right to insert Monsanto’s genes in their separate strains of corn and soybean plants. But, the AP found, access to Monsanto’s genes comes at a cost, and with plenty of strings attached.

I kinda want to say this for Jezebel and all the other kneejerk freaker-outers out there. I don’t love the Snookie Gets Clocked .gif because I love seeing a chick get punched by a dude, or I think that she had it comin’. I like it because it is SHOCKING, ok? Only the most fucked-up person would watch this and claim it is merely a dose of “equality” in a post-feminist world, and that’s who Jezebel chose to freak out over.

No, I enjoy this clip because it shows just how fucking insane a juiced-up, roided-out, drunk-ass “guido” could be to Punch a Fucking Woman. No matter how backward and sexist you may be, next to no one thinks that shit is ok. Guys punching girls isn’t equality motherfucker; women don’t compete against men in the Olympics, do they?

It takes a seriously rare breed of steroid asshole to punch a woman, and frankly I’m fascinated to see proof that he exists. I’ve seen a guy hit a female twice before, once in a bar in Brooklyn and once at a party in Ohio. Both times the chick hit him, and both times, as soon as the guy hit back, he was accosted by every other guy in the room. Snookie’s K.O. is not a matter of “OMG that bitch needs to be punched, and I’m so happy someone did it, hahaha,” it’s a matter of “Holy shit, that guy punched a girl, what a fucking piece of trash!”

And that’s basically why I, and probably many others, love this show. It’s a spectacle of things movies have parodied, and you imagined might exist, somewhere, in some foreign land, and now its right here and REAL and even more insane than you imagined. I watch the entire show with my hand over my mouth and face frozen in shock.

I certainly don’t think MTV should have not aired it. It fucking happened! But I’m going to be really interested to see how they treat it. (If the cast is all, “Bitch deserved it,” Imma hunt ‘em down and sick big drunk ‘roided-out dudes on each one of them.)
