In the spirit of today’s Bikini Kill nostalgia, I remembered the awesome lyric diss war between Kathleen Hanna and Fat Mike, the lead singer from that shitty pop punk band NOFX.

So basically, Kathleen Hanna at some point at some point called NoFX misogynists, and Fat Mike responded with a song called Kill Rock Stars (the title, a reference to the record label of Olympia Riot Grrl bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, etc).

The Courtney bit is about an instance where Courtney Love assaulted Kathleen Hanna. Nice one buddy. Brilliantly, Kathleen responded with “Deceptacon,” a fucking epic brat pop anthem that, if you don’t know it by name, you would surely recognize it immediately if I played it.

The linoleum floor mention is making fun of a NoFX song called “Linoleum,” and the chorus is basically a comment on how meaningless and boring NoFX’s lyrics are. When it comes to critics, I tend to prefer a “don’t stoop to their level” attitude, but this retort is kinda awesome. (In fact, I really wish I could write badass pop anthems as “fuck yous” to my enemies. Much more effective than a bitchy email!) So fuck you Fat Mike, Kathleen Hanna+Bikini Kill+Le Tigre rock.

I didn’t know about this until now. Well, there goes my respect for NOFX.

I have a mix cd with both Bikini Kill and NOFX on it, so booyah.

this is funny because both bands have influenced me very much and have kinda been a gateway for me into punk rock.

in all seriousness, the NOFX song is thought out and put together way better. though i may just be saying that because, while i hardly like either, i find NOFX to at least be tolerable in short bursts.

It is SUPER hilarious to me that this is suddenly being reblogged all over the place more than a year after I posted it. But anyhow, say what you will about the lyrical craftsmanship of each, ahem, diss, or whathaveyou, I was talking about the actual songs.

Pretty much all NOFX songs (A) sound the same and (B) are boring as shit (unless its 1997, is it 1997?), including and especially this one.

Deceptacon on the other hand is a song that doesn’t exist solely to insult someone, it’s excellent unrelated to its subject matter. In fact, most people who love it don’t even know what it’s about and you don’t need to. So other than just sharing some background, that was my point, it’s a brilliant, creative fucking pop song. I KNOW NOFX are like “pioneers” and whatnot, and I don’t totally hate them; there is worse music out there. But talking pure aesthetics, if NOFX didn’t sound like a dime-a-dozen group of mall punk manchildren maybe I’d be less biased. Ask any DJ what they would rather play. The NOFX song is boring and forgettable. The Le Tigre song is a fucking anthem.
